Here are a few of the many interesting and often visually stunning websites developed by lovers of history, with an emphasis on the medieval era:

 Deb’s Historical Research Page

This eye-bogglingly extensive site contains more than 100 links to websites covering history, religion, etiquette, clothing and fashion, medicine and disease, architecture, food and drink, arms, weapons, knights, and heraldry, entertainment, the British peerage, and much more.  One could spend all day browsing here!

 Odin’s Castle

This visually-striking site contains oodles of useful lore from antiquity to the Dark Ages, the age of Charlemagne, the medieval era, the Crusades, Renaissance and Tudor England, the legends of King Arthur and Robin Hood, plus many overarching topics like plant lore and astrology.

History and Culture of Anglo-Saxon England

This site includes ever-valuable maps (try writing historical fiction without them – very difficult!), Anglo-Saxon recipes, games and pastimes, information on great men, saints and kings, Gothic lore, Celtic lore and more.

History and Culture of Norman England

Among the many gems to be found on this attractive site is much information on the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror, and the Battle of Hastings.

Clothing and Fashion Through the Ages

This site generated a giddy thrill when I found it, which any historical romance writer will understand!  Tomes of textual and visual detail on male and female clothing during the Anglo-Saxon era, the Norman era, Italian and French Renaissance, the Baroque period, Regency and Victorian England, and much more.

To treat your eyes to a panoply of medieval art and imagery which I find inspirational as a writer, try visiting the following sites:

Try this link for many gorgeous examples of art from medieval illuminated manuscripts.

There are many colorful examples of medieval feasting, animals and agriculture, religious life and more at this link.

Finally, look at this link for an up-close-and-personal look at the celebrated Bayeux Tapestry, which is also a fine source of visual information on warfare at the time of the Battle of Hastings (1066), try:
